Immediately after updating to iOS 4, some users may notice that Exchange ActiveSync Mail, Contacts, or Calendars do not sync, or sync very slowly. In addition, some Exchange Server administrators may notice their servers running slowly.

To work around this issue, users should install a configuration profile from Apple that increases the amount of time the iOS 4 device will wait for the Exchange Server to respond to its sync requests. For best results, the profile should be installed on as many iOS 4 devices at your company as possible.

To install the profile:

  1. Use Safari on your iOS 4 device to download the configuration profile. It may be easiest to read this article with your iPhone or iPod touch and tap the download link there, but you may also email the attachment to another email account on your iOS 4 device, and tap the attachment to open it.
  2. Tap Install to install the profile, and enter your passcode if prompted.
  3. A warning message will appear because the profile is not signed. Tap Install Now.
  4. Tap Done to complete the installation, then power off your device and power it back on.
  5. Wait for your Exchange data to finish syncing.

After installation, the profile will be listed under Settings > General > Profile.

Critical

  • MS10-033 is a remote code execution vulnerability in both Quartz.dll and Asycfilt.dll and is rated Critical on all supported versions of Windows. Specially crafted media files could trigger the vulnerability when a user visits a web page or opens a malicious file.
  • MS10-034 is a cumulative update for ActiveX Kill Bits and is Critical on Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and Windows 7. There are two Microsoft controls we are applying Kill Bits for. Those are the Internet Explorer 8 Developer Tools control, and the Data Analyzer ActiveX control. The latter control is not installed by default. In addition, there are Kill Bits for four third-party controls. Please review the bulletin for additional details.
  • MS10-035 is a cumulative update for Internet Explorer. Of the six vulnerabilities addressed in the bulletin, only one, an information disclosure vulnerability, is publicly known. This issue was identified in Security Advisory 980088. We remain unaware of any active attacks against this vulnerability.

  • MS10-032 is an elevation of privilege issue in the affected Microsoft products. There is a potential remote vector if applications fail to properly request the length of the buffer when calling the affected API. All Microsoft applications make this call properly but there may be applications out there that do not. Regardless, installing this update addresses the issue for all vectors. See our Security Research & Defense (SRD) blog for more details on this one.
  • MS10-036 is a COM validation update. The issue could result in an attack through ActiveX in Office applications. This is not a new attack vector but the underlying vulnerability is and the bulletin addresses it. For additional clarification, I want to point out that Office XP does not have the architecture needed for the update. However, for customers running Office XP on Windows XP or newer operating systems, we have made a shim available that protects against the vulnerability. The shim can be installed via a Microsoft FixIt which can be downloaded from KB983235.
  • MS10-039 is a SharePoint related update, closing out Security Advisory 983438 which addressed an elevation of privilege vulnerability. We are not currently aware of any attacks against this issue.

Last week I noticed a unusual download at Microsoft.com called RDCman, it turned out to be a RDP manager.

I downloaded it and it does all what I want in a great RDP tool!

It supports import of serverlists, it support grouping and subgrouping, you can set configurations and passwords per group. You can autohide to connections list so you leverage all the real estate possible while the screen stays embedded.

You can connect using alternate credentials with console option on or off.

If your servers are numberd you can also create a general name of you servers with variable with numbers. Al great features if you need to manage many servers.

Oh and it is free too!

The strange thing is that it was version 2.2 and I never seen it before, als the about screen says nothing about Microsoft, just the author: Julian Burger. I assume this has been an internal tool for a while and now shared to the rest of the world. Thanks Julian!

    Official description:

RDCMan manages multiple remote desktop connections. It is useful for managing server labs where you need regular access to each machine such as automated checkin systems and data centers. It is similar to the built-in MMC Remote Desktops snap-in, but more flexible <- That is an understatement!

Facebook offers a convenient way to deactivate Facebook account. However, deactivation of Facebook does not completely and permanently the Facebook profile and accoucnt.
According to Facebook FAQ, deactivate Facebook account will render user’s profile and all information associated with it immediately inaccessible to other Facebook users. In other words, the account is effectively disappear from the Facebook service. However, the Facebook account is not been purged from Facebook’s servers. Instead, the profile information (friends, photos, interests, etc.) is saved, so that the account can be recovered and reactivated in future with the information intact if the user decides to do so, or regret on the deactivation decision.

Permanently delete the Facebook account will completely remove and purge all personally identifiable information associated with the Facebook account from Facebook database. This includes information like name, email address, mailing address, and IM screen name. However, do note that copies of some material (photos, notes, etc.) may remain in Facebook servers for technical reasons, but this material is disassociated from any personal identifiers and completely inaccessible to other users.

Facebook users who want to get rid of Facebook once and for what, and do not think that he or she will use Facebook again, Facebook provides a way to delete the account. Once Facebook account is deleted, it’s impossible to reactivate the account or retrieve any of the content or information previously associated in the account. There is no option for recovery once Facebook account is deleted.

To delete a Facebook account, log in to the Facebook account, and then submit the “Delete My Account” at https://ssl.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=delete_account.

Click on Submit button. Enter the password to confirm it’s your account, and the captcha security spam check. Then click on Okay button. An email will be sent to indicate that the Facebook account will be deleted in 14 days.

During the 14 days account deletion grace period, do not login or sign in to Facebook account, nor perform any action utilizing Facebook, such as Share on Facebook on Like in Facebook, or login and sign up to other websites by using Facebook Connect (Facebook user name and password credentials). Any interaction and usage of the Facebook account during the period will prevent the account from being deleted.

Alternative Method to Delete Facebook Account

If the above official method to delete the Facebook account fails, it’s also possible to email Facebook to request them to delete your Facebook account directly. The email address is:

    privacy@facebook.com

Within a few days (allows up to a week), an email response should be sent by Facebook to confirm that the account has been permanently deleted.

If there is no response from Facebook, and you can still access your Facebook account or given an option to reactivate the account, try email Facebook again, with the following three email addresses:

    privacy@facebook.com
    support@facebook.com
    info@facebook.com

The Facebook account is permanently deleted when user cannot login to the account anymore, and there is not message which offers user a chance to reactivate the Facebook account.

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Build 6.1.7601.16537 v.153 was leaked in the wild a little over a month ago and at that time, the bits came accompanied by documentation detailing the changes associated with the first major upgrade for the operating system.

I did offer an overview of the evolution represented by Windows 7’s first service pack in April, but without going into all the details, reportedly coming from Microsoft. The Redmond company, of course, has yet to officially announce any changes for Windows 7 SP1, with two exceptions, the Dynamic Memory and RemoteFX features, or to confirm the leaked information.
However, the documents that made it outside of Redmond and into the wild alongside Build 6.1.7601.16537 v.153, do deliver an insight into the modifications planned for the service pack. Earlier this week, another early development milestone of Windows 7 SP1 was leaked. Build 7601.16556.100421-1510; Service Pack 1, v.172 is reported to be a candidate for the first fully-fledged Beta for Windows 7 SP1, by third-party sources, including Wzor, which shared the bits with the world.
Users that have jumped the gun and installed the leaked copies of Windows 7 SP1 are noting that they’re unable to notice differences compared to Build 7600 RTM. This is because modifications, when they do exist, are under-the-hood rather than on the surface of the OS. I have included an excerpt from the leaked “Notable Changes in Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2” documentation below in order to help end users understand just what Microsoft has planned for the future of the platform.
There are a few things, however, that must be underlined. First off, according to the leaked info, the details in the documentation have been updated last in March 2010. In this regard, all information needs to be taken with a grain of salt, as the features or changes it is describing might not actually make it into SP1. In addition, just as it was the case for Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2, Service Pack 1 will be released as a single package for both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. This is why the same service pack will impact both platforms differently in some aspects, and in the same manner in others.

    Changes specific to Windows 7

Additional support for communication with third-party federation services - Additional support has been added to allow Windows 7 clients to effectively communicate with third-party identity federation services (those supporting the WS-Federation passive profile protocol). This change enhances platform interoperability, and improves the ability to communicate identity and authentication information between organizations.
Improved HDMI audio device performance - A small percentage of users have reported issues in which the connection between a computer running Windows 7 an HDMI audio device is lost after a system reboot. Updates have been incorporated into SP1 to ensure that connections between Windows 7 computers and HDMI audio devices are consistently maintained.
Corrected behavior when printing mixed-orientation XPS documents - Prior to the release of SP1, some customers have reported difficulty when printing mixed-orientation XPS documents (documents containing pages in both portrait and landscape orientation) using the XPS Viewer, resulting in all pages being printed entirely in either portrait or landscape mode. This issue has been addressed in SP1, allowing users to correctly print mixed-orientation documents using the XPS Viewer.

A small utility offered for free by Microsoft could prove immensely helpful in scenarios in which users are searching for information inside Office documents on certain platforms.

The Office 2010 Filter Packs went live on the Microsoft Download Center last week, and are currently up for grabs, enabling customers to enhance the default search capabilities of products such as SharePoint Server, Exchange Server, SQL Server and Windows client and server platforms. Of course, the Office 2010 Filter Packs integrate with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.
“The Microsoft Filter Pack is a single point-of-distribution for Office IFilters. IFilters are components that allow search services to index content of specific file types, letting you search for content in those files. They are intended for use with Microsoft Search Services (Sharepoint, SQL, Exchange, Windows Search),” Microsoft explained.

In certain cases, the Filter Pack will significantly simplify the search process, especially for queries using terms related to the content of documents rather than to the name they were saved under. However, the Office Filter Packs work only in the context of the Microsoft Search Service. As the name of the app implies, content of Office 2010 documents will also be indexed following the installation of the utility. At the same time, additional files, even those of non-Microsoft formats will be indexed.

“Install this product if you want to search for content in the file types listed below. The Filter Pack includes: Legacy Office Filter (97-2003; .doc, .ppt, .xls); Metro Office Filter (2007; .docx, .pptx, .xlsx); Zip Filter; OneNote filter; Visio Filter; Publisher Filter; and Open Document Format Filter,” the company stated.

Microsoft finalized Office 2010 in mid-April 2010. At this point in time, Office 2010 RTM is available to MSDN and TechNet subscribers, but also to business customers.

Every new version of Windows brings improvements over its previous versions. Microsoft has made progress in numerous fields of their operating system. These fields include the overall interface, desktop customization options, handling our files, and overall security. But the Welcome Screen and the way users login has remained somewhat unchanged. Users have to enter/select their username and then a password to login. Why has there not been a built-in Windows feature to change the way (for the better) users login to Windows? Suppose an exam was being conducted which required candidates to login with their accounts; anybody could login with anybody’s account as long as they knew their username and password.

Presenting an alternative to traditional Windows login and a solution to problems, such as the one above, is Luxand Blink. It provides its users with a different way to login to Windows: through facial recognition.

Luxand Blink is a free application compatible with 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7. The download size of the application is 8MB and installs in a standard way. For it work properly, of course a webcam is required to be installed in the computer.

The application starts running after the computer starts up but before it has logged on to any account. We can then look into the webcam and have our face recognized by the application. It uses its advance image recognition algorithms to recognize our face. Such is the competence of this application, that whether the lighting is different or our hair are different, Luxand Blink will still recognize our face and log us in.

An application increasing the security of the Windows logon procedure, Luxand Blink will serve many.
